Stalking

What is stalking?

It is engaging in a course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to fear for his or her safety or the safety of others, or suffer substantial emotional distress.

Common behaviors can include excessive texting and/or calling, unwanted contacts on social media, unwanted gifts, showing up/approaching an individual or family/friends, monitoring, surveillance, or property damage.

Fear can be interpreted differently. For example, having flowers delivered is not scary. But it is to the person who receives them from an ex-partner who has relocated to get away from them the flowers are perceived as terrifying.

Stalking is a crime in all 50 States and the District of Columbia. It is also a violation of student conduct codes and Title IX. More information visit Title IX

Are you experiencing stalking?

  • Trust your instincts. Do not minimize or downplay the behavior.
  • Call Public Safety at 410-617-5911
  • Document/keep a record of any contact.
  • Save evidence when possible.
  • Get connected with on or off campus help. (See resource tab).

How do I help a friend who is being stalked?

  • Believe and validate what they are telling you. DO NOT say, β€œMaybe they miss you.” DO SAY, β€œthat sounds scary” or β€œI can see why you are upset.”
  • Focus on the offender’s actions. DO NOT say, β€œWhy do you respond?” DO SAY, β€œIt’s not cool they keep texting you.” DO NOT place blame. DO SAY, β€œthis is not your fault.”
  • Support and encourage them to seek help. Refer them to campus resources (see Resource tab)
  • Respect their privacy. DO NOT give any information to the stalker or tell anyone else.
